When was the last time you took yourself out on a date? I mean carved out some time just for you.
If it’s been recently kudos to you! Keep it up.
If it’s something that’s been in the back of your mind but you just haven’t gotten around to it, then this is your reminder to schedule it today.
But, if you’re asking… “Date myself? What are you talking about Michelle?”, then it’s long over due.
I’m talking about treating yourself for the day or setting aside a few hours to do what brings you joy. It’s that thing that when you do it you are so engaged in the moment; time just seems to go by so fast. It’s a time when anything that didn’t get done yesterday or needs to get done today can wait for now.
It’s your time to replenish and nourish your soul.
We lead busy lives with our agendas and to-do lists that sometimes our needs can fall through the cracks. You may feel the demands from work, family, kids, your partner or friends. It can become overwhelming at times to the point where you begin to feel depleted.
We live in a society that is highly competitive, to do better, be better, look better, have the best body, be the best mom, wife, lover, employee, manager, CEO. We have convinced ourselves that we have to balance it all AND do it all flawlessly with a smile on our face or else we have failed somehow.
Exhausting. Unrealistic. Damaging.
And such a big fat lie!
Sometimes (or most of the time) it’s hard for us to even give ourselves permission to schedule in that time for Self because that means something else will fall by the wayside and then we tell ourselves we are being selfish.
Another big fat lie!
Caring for yourself on a regular basis is essential to your well-being. And not just caring for yourself when things are great but during the hard times you are still willing to attend to your needs rather than ignoring them.
Here are 3 scientifically proven reasons why you need to take yourself out on a date pronto!
When you make self-care a regular routine, here’s what happens:
1. Increases positive emotions. When we increase positive emotions such as happiness, excitement, joy, appreciation it becomes an extension of what we experience with ourselves and our world. For example, our energy levels and immune systems improve, there is an increase in engagement with work and with other people, and our physical and mental health improves. In becoming happier, we also strengthen our feelings of self-confidence and self-esteem.
2. Cultivates gratitude. Increasing positive emotions, puts you in an energy of gratitude because you are having an experience of what is good in your life. This is a great time to think about what you love about your life and savor the feelings it brings. It is a reminder that even though every day may not be good, we can seek out what is good in every day.
3. Relationship Building. The most important component to our well-being is Relationships (I’ll be getting into this more in my next newsletter) It all starts with how you are in relationship with yourself. When you schedule time to treat yourself, you are building a positive and support relationship with yourself. You are saying yes to your needs, you are saying yes to meeting those needs and you are saying no to putting yourself last. This will avoid depleting yourself which overtime will affect your overall health and well-being.
So pull out your schedule today and choose a date this month to take yourself out. It could be to get a massage or go to a movie or out for a nice lunch or reading that book you’ve been eyeing with a nice glass of wine or your favorite non-alcoholic drink. It’s totally up to you.
You can also invite a friend(s) along and make a day of it.
But remember, only invite those people who feed your soul!
